Foldable Smartphones A Real Failure<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anyone\npaying attention to the smartphone world will have noticed that the steady\nstream of new designs has all but dried up. Or at least; they\u2019ve reached a\npoint where new models are no longer as interesting, or significant, as they\nonce were.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once\ntouchscreens became the standard, and phone cameras were as good as they needed\nto be, it seemed like none of the major tech giants knew where to go next. Very\nsimply; smartphones had got as advanced as they needed to be, and few saw any\nreason to upgrade. This spelled disaster for the likes of Samsung and Apple<\/a>, both of which survive on consumers seeing a\nreason to buy a new phone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So in an\neffort to create the new big thing, tech giants made an attempt to introduce\nfoldable phones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What Is A Foldable Phone?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many will\nremember that some of the earliest mobile phones folded. Of course, this was\nback in the late 90s and early 2000s, and the devices were clumsy and clunky.\nBut at the time were cutting edge. But, designers quickly saw that the folding\nmechanic was largely unnecessary, and flat, thin, models quickly took centre\nstage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After all, when all anyone really wanted to do was play real money Blackjack<\/a> on the go, having to unfold a device was just an unnecessary extra step. So it seemed like a smartphone that folded was a thing of the past. Or was it<\/a>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Samsung\nreleased the Galaxy Z Flip, and Galaxy Fold, Motorola brought out the Razr, and\nthe Huawei Mate X also folded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why Does It Fold?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yes, the\ndevices folded, and yes, it was a neat little trick. But original reception of\nthe devices was lukewarm to say the least. Original reports said that the foldable technology was flimsy<\/a>, broke easily, and couldn\u2019t stand up to the\ntreatment of a device that didn\u2019t fold. Plus, the biggest question of all; why\ndid it fold?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The idea\nseems to be to save space. Folding phones fit more snuggly into a pocket, and\nsome designs act as a double phone and tablet in one. But, the simple fact of\nthe matter was that the design choice was not based on anything anyone had been\nasking for. Or to put it another way; no one really wanted a folding\nsmartphone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Total Disaster?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

So are\nfolding smartphones dead before they\u2019ve even had a chance to thrive? Not\nnecessarily. Although no one was falling over themselves to adopt the new\nmodels, it seems like there is some room in the market. Although it certainly\nwasn\u2019t the revolution that tech companies were hoping for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There may\nbe some interest in being able to do away with a tablet, and simply adopt a\nsingle device that acts as both, but at the most this is a niche product only\nof interest to those who enjoy the cutting edge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\nconclusion is that ailing tech giants will have to look elsewhere to spark mass\ninterest in buying a new range of phones.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
