Modding, or modifying games, is a massive,\nmultifaceted online subculture. Sometimes something as simple as a new outfit\nis added, while other times the game is almost entirely tweaked from the ground\nup. The more celebrated mods, meanwhile, can be considered an entirely new\ngame.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But perhaps the most fascinating part of the\nwhole situation is that mods are free.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brutal Doom<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brutal Doom, an enormously detailed and\nstunningly advanced version of the classic Doom<\/a>, is regarded as one of the greatest mods of\nall time. Put together over many years by Brazilian modder Marcos Abenante,\notherwise known as Sergeant_Mark_IV, the level of effort that went into the\nproject is stunning. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Extensive new animations and systems have\nbeen inserted into the game, including an array of new weapons, new character\nAI, and a veritable ocean of new blood. John Romero, one of the original\ncreators of Doom, went on record to declare that if his game had released with\nhalf the features of Brutal Doom, it would likely have destroyed the gaming\nindustry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Free For All<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

But, what exactly has Marcos Abenante got for\nhis efforts? Although various companies have tried, and largely failed to\nmonetise mods, most modders do their work for free. It\u2019s true that Abenante has\nreportedly received monetary support from the community to continue his work, but\nthat can hardly be called a stable income.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The key is that the biggest, and most\nsuccessful mods have gone on to launch immensely successful careers. The\nenormously successful DayZ, which was originally a mod for the popular Arma\nseries of military shooters, eventually went on to become a franchise all of\nits own. One of the original team even went on to create PUBG, which eventually\nturned into the original Battle Royale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your Resume\nIn A Mod<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

These days, the best mods are generally seen\nas a demonstration of a programmer\u2019s capability. Finding a job with a major\nstudio is all the more likely when someone can quickly, easily showcase what\nthey are capable of.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But even if not finding a job through the\nsupport of a mod project, DayZ<\/a> and PUBG are a\nperfect example of what can come of a truly exceptional bit of effort and\npassion.\n\nOf course, most mods aren\u2019t on the level of DayZ,\nand are nothing more than a hobby<\/a> for a few ambitious amateur coders. But the\nfact that these little projects have become a thriving, ever growing online\ncommunity is testimony to the creativity of the online world.
