Stadia \u2013 The Google Failure Of The\nDecade<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stadia,\nthe much hyped game streaming service from Google, did not so much land with a\nthud as it did face plant into a dumpster. Many are already calling the service dead<\/a>, which is astounding, considering it has\nbarely even been properly released.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stadia\nis, for all intents and purposes, one of Google\u2019s<\/a>\nbiggest failures ever. This is saying something, since the Google Glass was an\nepic failure of its own, and Stadia is considered far worse than that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So what\nwent wrong? A closer look reveals an utterly abysmal marketing campaign, made\nconsiderably worse by a tech team that drastically overestimated what was even\npossible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What Is\/was Stadia?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\nconcept behind Stadia was simple; do away with physical gaming consoles, and\ninstead simply stream games directly from a remote server. The processing of\nthe game is handled at the server end of the setup, which means that a gamer\nnever need to worry about buying another Xbox or PlayStation again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A\nwonderful idea, but with a few massive caveats. The biggest, and the one that\nmost tech savvy individuals saw from a mile away, was that the level of\ninternet connection required to make such a thing possible was supremely\nuncommon, no matter where you are in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After\nall, checking the best odds online<\/a> is\none thing, but a constant, two way connection with a server that is essential\ndown to the millisecond issomething that barely anyone on the planet\nexperiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Promising The World<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Google,\nalthough having to have been aware of this conundrum, only aimed to make the\nsituation infinitely worse with their marketing campaign. Adverts made\nobscenely unrealistic claims, such as games in 4K with 60 FPS performance,\nwhich is just adding an anvil to the back of an already gasping camel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Promising\n1080P resolutions would have drastically eased the inevitable latency problems\nthat the streamed games were sure to be plagued with. But, of course, promising\nthis would have impressed no one, so instead Google stuck with raising\nexpectations through the roof.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Promise The World And Fail<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

When\nStadia did eventually release, the results were what virtually everyone\nexpected. Reports of games that suffered severe lag, did not run at the\npromised specifications, plus an otherwise severe lack of many of the other\nfeatures that had been promised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The real\nquestion is; how did one of the biggest tech companies in the world manage a\ncolossal blunder of this magnitude?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\ncommon trend in the video game industry, and tech industry<\/a> in general, is to build as much hype as\npossible, even before the product in question is close to being ready.\nMarketing teams can only work with what they have been told the product will be\ncapable of, while engineer teams can only speculate as to what their product will\nbe in the end. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\ncombination of pressure to sell something that is not yet finished, along with\nmoney being poured into an endless black hole of development, results in a\nStadia-sized disaster.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
